English Language Education Program
The Burlington Public Schools’ ELE program meets the mandates of Question 2 and NCLB and is aligned with the regulations and guidelines of the Massachusetts Department of Education. Limited English Proficient (LEP) students receive support through Burlington’s Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program as well as receive additional support in English Language Development (ELD) in pull out ELD classes. In addition, ELD Teachers assist ELL students in the classroom when needed. The ELL student’s prior education, English Language proficiency, native language literacy, and parent input are key components in deciding student services.
English Language Education Program Goals
The Burlington Public Schools are committed to providing a quality educational program to insure its low incidence ELL population can achieve educational performance to meet federal state and local standards for academic performance.
To achieve and maintain this goal Burlington Public Schools will:
- 1. Identify ELLs according to state regulations and conduct ongoing assessment of ELL’s language development and academic knowledge according to state requirements.
- 2. Place ELLs in an appropriate program of study, which will include SEI and may include additional ELD.
- 3. Align curriculum in all subject areas with the state curriculum frameworks /English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes for English Language Learners.
