Your teacher will be giving you the Marshall Simonds Reading List*. This letter will explain the procedure for becoming one of our Marshall Simonds Summer Reading Olympians.
After selecting and reading your books, fill out the special report forms. We require a minimum of three reports for a student to become a "Reading Olympian". There are three levels of "Olympians"- Gold, Silver, and Bronze, and the more books you report on, the better your medal. By October, there will be a special bulletin board celebrating our "Olympians", and a special celebration activity to which all "Olympians" will be invited. Please turn in your forms to your homeroom teacher when you come back to school in September. The deadline for turning in your forms will be Friday, September 17th.
If you need more forms, they will be available over the summer on the Burlington Public School web site at http://www.burlington.mec.edu where you look under Summer Programs. The Burlington Public Library will also have copies of the report form available.
*Librarian’s Note:
You may read and report on any age-appropriate book for the summer reading program. Your book choice may not be on our summer reading list because our list was created with very specific guidelines. First, a book must still be in print as a paperback, so that the library can purchase sufficient copies. Second, books that are read by every student as part of their language arts classes are not included. And, third, only two books by an author are listed. We encourage you to read books on our list, but you should feel free to read other books as well.
