Many of the children are getting new shoes at this time of year. Jessica Kort, our Physical Therapist asks you to keep these suggestions in mind while shopping for spring footwear:

1. Lace shoes provide more support and is helpful for children who have flat feet, lower muscle tone, or who “roll in” at the ankles/forefoot. A “counter” (firm are around the heel) also offers more support.

2. Shoes should have a litle room in front, but too much room affects the child’s balance. Shoes that have NO room at the toes, or across the top of the shoe can be uncomfortable and also affect balance.

3. Shoes/sneakers should have a low heel. High heels or platform shoes are not designed for a child’s growing foot..

4. If you have questions regarding the fit of your child’s new shoes. I would be happy to check them out. Make sure that the shoes have NOT been work outside, and ask the store if they can be returned if not worn outside. Just let your child’s teacher know, send the shoes, along in his/her backpack, and I will gladly look at them and check the fit.
