Counseling groups provide children with a supportive environment to share concerns related to their experiences, help them learn effective coping strategies, help them understand their feelings, or to build and reinforce social skills. Small student groups are a wonderful way for your child to meet new friends, to gain more self-confidence, and to develop more positive coping skills in a safe and fun setting.
Groups meet regularly during lunch in the guidance office. There is a discussion/sharing time and activities such as games, stories, and drawing/coloring. Parent permission is needed for students to participate.
We work with students individually for a number of problems a student might present, such as friendship issues, difficulty in the classroom, on the playground, or on the bus, conflict resolution, new student orientation, difficulty coming to school and anger management, to name a few. Referrals for students to meet with a school counselor can be made by classroom teachers or other school staff (i.e., school nurse or principal), by parents, or through student self-referrals.
Individual counseling sessions are scheduled during a time convenient for the teacher and the child. Our hope is to not have a child miss academic instruction.
